Rediscover the Route of Lewis & Clark
Today, much of the Montana landscape that Lewis and Clark crossed remains unchanged. From solitary sandstone through river canyons to mountain meadows, Montana's rivers and highways flow past scores of landmarks related to the expedition. Be sure to visit these landmarks while you're enjoying Montana's beauty and recreation.
Virginia City and the Old West
Rich placer diggings were discovered in Alder Gulch in the spring of 1863 and Virginia City became the capitol of the territory. This very much alive ghost town is now frozen in time. Virginia City is a well preserved Victorian gold mining town where you can rediscover the original Old West.
Lewis and Clark Caverns
Lewis and Clark Caverns State Park is Montana's first and best-known state park featuring one of the largest known limestone caverns in the Northwest. Naturally air conditioned, these spectacular caves are lined with stalactites, stalagmites, columns, and helictites. The caves are electrically lighted and safe to visit. Above ground, a self-guided nature trail provides opportunities to understand the natural surroundings.
